In addition to its 95 counties, Virginia has 38 of the 41 independent cities in the United States, which exist as "county equivalents," separate entities from the counties in which they reside. Three of these independent cities, Chesapeake, Suffolk and Virginia Beach, were entire counties prior to their patriotic declarations of independence in the 1960's. These ex-counties thus have historic county courthouses worthy of our interest:
